As much as I hate giving a number to grade the effectiveness of a person in the MLM business, sometimes it does serve a purpose. Let’s say you have a downline who is a 5 on the effectiveness scale, with 10 being the highest; and this downline doesn’t take the initiative to improve on him/herself, more often than not, he/she will be a 5 for a looooooooong time.
Unfortunately, a 5 will almost never attract, motivate or retain a person who has a higher scale level than him/her. 5’s can recruit, motivate and mobilise 5’s, 4’s or lower. But no matter what, a 5 can never lead 6’s or higher. What’s going to happen is that your organisation can and only will get weaker and weaker when everybody is recruiting people who are on a lower scale than them!
Over time, the net effect of recruiting people less effective than you is an ever-increasing number of lower-calibre leaders. Eventually this compromises the quality of leadership in your entire organisation. What will happen is your MLM business stagnates. Guaranteed.
Fortunately, all 5’s know people who are 6’s and above. But unfortunately, most 5’s do not dare to approach these people and tell them about their business! So what gives? If you’re a 5, what I can suggest is to leverage on your team, your company and any of your upline who is a 6 and above. And in the meantime, work on improving your scale to 6, 7 and slowly all the way to 10!
But please do not think that even if you’re an 8, you’ll do fine in this business. You’ll only do well if you recruit people who are 8’s or higher. When it comes to inviting people to take a look at our business, our first tendency is always to call on people who are weaker than us – people who more malleable, less stressful to manage and more easily impressed by your prowess. For the sake of your business, resist the temptation of doing that.
This is what I’d suggest if you want to do well in your MLM business:
- Encourage your people (including yourself) to go after the busiest, most accomplished, very high on the effectiveness scale and people who already successful in their own trade; and
- At the same time, work on upgrading their (and your own too) effectiveness level to as high a scale level as they possibly can.
Do this two things consistently and you’ll start seeing positive result in your business.
May you be successful in your MLM business. And may you lead more people into achieving time and financial freedom!
Yours sincerely,
Melvin Neo
PS: Although this idea was not new, I was reminded of once again when I read the book, ‘Axiom – Powerful Leadership Proverbs‘ by Bill Hybels. It’s an excellent book on leadership. I strongly encourage you to get it.
