If you’re in the market of getting a e-book reader and are confused with the myriad of choices, I hope the reviews of the Amazon Kindle 2 and Kindle DX
below will help you at least narrow certain choices down. If you don’t have a Kindle and are looking to buy one but don’t know how, read my previous blog here.
These reviews are given by REAL users who are actually using the Kindle themselves:
- Name:: Manuel
- Model: Kindle DX
- Likes:
- Excellent Battery life
- Choice of books from Amazon for Kindle (could be better, still not all books are digitized today)
- Size and Weight – Excellent for at-home reading
- Screen (It does what it says it does)
- Built-in thesaurus
- Dislikes:
- Response time action after pressing buttons (slow)
- Size and Weight – not the lightest, smallest product to carry around
- I spend more money on books now due to the convenience than I used to
- Others:
- Wireless: I have the original DX (US version) and therefore I do not have the luxury of enjoying the recently ‘opened’ wireless access in Europe. However, I don’t read magazines or newspapers on my Kindle and as books in general are $2 more per book in Europe compared to the US, I have no problem remaining with the original version. I honestly do not miss this convenience, I tend to search and browse for books online and usually have more than 10 books I haven’t read on it. I do not have the need to find and download books at every chance just so that it will sit on the device too and has to wait to be read.
- Do-It-All device: There are people who want this device to do it all, surf the net, have color screen, order pizza, etc. To me it does what it is supposed to do and I prefer not to have all the other add ons that could make the device heavier, more expensive etc. Mobile phones of today have a million and one options that the large majority will never use, much less know it even is available. Leave the Kindle as is, an excellent e-reader. Tablet computers will soon be there for those with extra needs.

- Likes:
- The screen, of course, it’s like paper.
- The ability to store thousands of books and magazines. I no longer have to worry what books/magazines to bring for my business trips.
- Ability to get my books in under a minute, as a result I have never read so intensely in my life.
- Magazine subscriptions save me lots of money as I read a lot of magazines and I can pay US pricing.
- The ability to check words in the on board dictionary by placing the cursor against the word is super cool.
- Love the geeky dead author portraits.
- One-hand operation: I can rock my newborn baby and read at the same time.
- Dislikes:
- The screen, I could do with better contrast. The greenish tint bothers me occasionally.
- The keyboard: The Kindle could be a good note taker if not for the stiff and almost unusable keys.
- The pagination: I am totally lost where I am in the book. Not great for reading manuals: jumping to other pages is slow and involves a few steps.

– I like this as it has 2 pieces of elastic that hold the kindle in place
- Conclusion: I’m really happy with my Kindle but would probably prefer a bigger screen but the overall size of the Kindle should stay the same.
